Ideation Event RSVPs due October 11

The Office of Instructional Innovation (OII) is hosting the 2017 Ideation Event on Friday, October 20, from 2–5 p.m. in Baker University Center 240/242 Multipurpose Room on the Athens Campus. This three-hour idea-generating session is designed to help shape ideas of academic innovation that might be supported as part of the Academic Innovation Accelerator (AIA). The event will serve as a kick-off to the second year of the AIA.

Anyone is welcome to attend who wants to explore ideas for the future of teaching and learning at OHIO, including faculty, instructional staff, student affairs professionals, advisors, students, and community partners.

The AIA aims to advance academic innovation that can be widely shared across the University by providing a pipeline process to bring these ideas into reality quickly. Past ideas have explored creating multidisciplinary programs, using data to enhance student success, or radically changing how to engage students. Attendees are encouraged to think about concepts at both the macro level (e.g., institutional level) and the micro level (e.g., course level).

“Our first Ideation Event last year was an incredible experience that yielded many promising ideas from our university community,” said Brad Cohen, senior vice provost for instructional innovation. “We are confident this second iteration of the AIA will enable even greater reach and impact as we work together to advance the University’s mission in creative new ways.”

This year’s event will open at 2 p.m. with speakers discussing the AIA’s second iteration. Attendees are welcome to come any time between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. There will be support from peers, instructional designers, project managers, leadership, and other OHIO staff dedicated to the AIA initiative, as well as other resources to help bring attendees’ ideas to fruition.

OII strives to support every idea that is proposed; a number of 2016 proposed projects were advanced through the AIA or other University channels.

“After the 2016 Ideation Event, I put together a small team of instructional designers who met with each project sponsor to further scope the idea, explore options and identify solutions to move the project forward,” said Mike Roy, instructional design manager. “We consulted with several stakeholders and ended up providing support to a number of projects for the next several months.”

Those interested should RSVP by Wednesday, October 11. Attendees should come to the event prepared to share their ideas, receive peer feedback, and take a step toward implementing their vision for the future of teaching and learning at OHIO.

Individuals who are interested but don’t have a specific idea yet are welcome to come for inspiration. Those unable to attend are still invited to RSVP so their ideas can be shared; they also are encouraged to follow up with one of the members of the AIA team.

The Office of Instructional Innovation (OII) serves as a catalyst to spark bold experimentation and sustainable discovery of innovative instructional models that fulfill the University’s promise of a transformative educational experience. OII provides a variety of services to faculty, staff, and students in support of academic units and online programs, as well as to advance initiatives to further the institution’s mission.
