‘Getting a Job: The Global Professional in Today’s World’ to be held Nov. 17

A special event focusing on finding a job and professional development will be held on Friday, Nov. 17, beginning at noon in Baker University Center Ballroom A.

“Getting a Job: The Global Professional in Today’s World” is part of the Global Professional Development Series sponsored by the Center for International Studies (CIS) and coordinated by the Global Leadership Center. This event is free and open to the public, and specifically targets students of all majors who are interested in working in a global environment. This event is part of the International Education Week celebration at 91̽.

Dr. Patrick Murphy, associate dean for research and graduate studies and associate professor in the Department of Media Studies and Production at Temple University, will serve as the keynote speaker for the afternoon.

A graduate of the CIS, Murphy has also served as a visiting professor in the School of Communication and Humanities, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Querétaro, Mexico. In addition, he was a Fulbright-Garcia Robles fellow in Mexico, a delegate of the American Documentary Showcase series, and a visiting professor for the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea program.

A widely-respected expert, Murphy is author of “The Media Commons: Globalization and Environmental Discourses,” (University of Illinois Press, 2017) and his work has appeared in numerous publications.

The alumni panel discussion will follow the keynote address and will feature Murphy and:

  • Lance Healy, chief innovation officer for Banyan Technology
  • Marua Fulton, country director for the Peace Corps Myanmar
  • Anastasia Karpoukhina, disaster program manager for the Red Cross, CT and RI Regions

The Nov. 17 event is part of the Global Professional Development Series of lectures, workshops and special events designed to offer valuable tips and tools to help OHIO students graduate equipped to succeed. The series showcases the value of studying at OHIO and in the CIS through its weekly activities and special events.

One of the Global Professional Development Series events held earlier this fall, for example, was focused on “Meaningful Networking,” and students found it extremely helpful.

“I love that it was adopted on the spot for the audience,” Olivia Raney said. “It had very useful info, too.”

Other events in the series have focused on topics such as “Applying for Funding,” “True Colors” and “Who Are You and Why Should I Care?”

CIS alumni also play a key role in the Global Professional Development Series by sharing their knowledge and experiences with the current students at special events such as the Friday, Nov. 17 session. That event will be the last of the fall semester, but the Global Professional Development Series will continue in the spring semester with more sessions on finding jobs, preparing for careers and other topics.

“Getting a Job: The Global Professional in Today’s World” will be held on Friday, Nov. 17, beginning at noon in Baker University Center Ballroom A.
