Prepare for an intellectually stimulating weekend in Athens at this year’s 5th annual On The Green Weekend, May 16-19.

Experience the renowned Alumni College, a series of lectures taught by OHIO faculty. Then, catch a historic tour of The Ridges or General Sherman’s birthplace or go behind the scenes at Athens three breweries.

Alumni College courses will be offered on Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Baker University Center. Faculty from a variety of colleges – including the College of Fine Arts, the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, the Scripps College of Communication and more – will share their expertise. Check out a complete list of course offerings.

Tour options include the Sherman House historical tour, the Observatory tour, the Ridges Today tour and the Athens Brewery Education tour. Check out the full list of tour locations, times and dates.

The Sherman House tour takes you to the birthplace of Civil War General William Sherman in Lancaster, Ohio, where you’ll learn about the rich history of General Sherman and Ohio’s role in the Civil War. This tour will be led by Brian Schoen, an associate professor in OHIO’s History Department.

The Observatory tour, hosted after sundown by OHIO’s astronomy faculty, invites participants to stargaze at the University’s observatory, located at The Ridges.

The Ridges tour provides a chance to see the old asylum on the hill in a new way. Tour participants will see renovated spaces and their current uses, including the art museum, research labs and Child Development Center. The tour will also include a look at the cottages and undeveloped spaces that are usually off-limits to guests.

“Guided by Shawna Bolin, associate vice president for university planning, the tour will include historic and future use perspectives with an opportunity to see inside currently used and unoccupied spaces,” said Jocelyn Johnson, assistant to the vice president of alumni relations.

Finally, the Athens Brewery Education tour will allow you to explore three of the local breweries in Athens and learn about their brewing process. This tour will visit Little Fish Brewing Co., Devil’s Kettle Brewing and Jackie O’s Taproom. The tour will include transportation, food and samples at each brewery.
