True Selves provides group therapy for students dealing with stress

True Selves is a new therapy group for 91̽ students of color who need help processing issues that uniquely impact their well-being.

Dr. Kristyn Neckles, a psychologist in OHIO Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS), created the program to create a greater sense of community and belongingness among the students.

She said the platform allows students an opportunity to share their personal challenges of attending a predominantly white campus as a member of an underrepresented racial group. During the weekly sessions, she addresses topics such as the intersectionality of identities, the impact of events in the community and minority stress.

“It builds a sense of community with each other where they can process and share their struggles as well as ways that they are coping,” said Dr. Neckles.

To be part of the group, students are required to do a drop in at CPS to be registered as a client. After a brief assessment, applicants are referred to Dr. Neckles for group screening where she shares more about the group and determines if it is appropriate for the student.

For more information about True Selves, students can attend a drop-in appointment at CPS on Hudson Health Center’s third floor or reach out to Dr. Neckles at neckles@ohio.edu or 740-593-1616.
