Sustainable Infrastructure Hub Seminar led by Dr. David Bayless is Nov. 6

Dr. Theresa Moran, the OHIO Office of Sustainability’s Sustainable Living Hub Coordinator, discussed Hub initiatives at this semester’s second Sustainability Hub Seminar on October 3rd in Baker Center’s Front Room.

Moran, OHIO’s Food Studies Director, provided an overview of the Hub’s work to improve the sustainability of food, grounds, transportation and student life at the university. She connected the work of Plant Biology professor Art Trese, pictured above with students, at the OHIO Student Farm and the Farm to OHIO Working group to the study of the production, consumption, meaning and representation of food.

The Student Farm’s Circle Garden, located at 338 W. State St., was established in 1975 and has provided generations of students with a hands-on learning experience which prioritizes community and lifelong learning.  During the seminar a student panel described their work in the garden and answered questions from the audience.  Rachel McDonald, Tyler Melcher, Brady Dotson and Azure Stephens all spoke eloquently about the impact their work in the garden has had on their studies, and on their lives outside of academics.

In order to showcase ongoing work at OHIO within the sustainability theme of Student Life, the seminar also outlined Bobcats Helping Bobcats initiatives, including the Cats’ Cupboard food pantry and Meal Bank program for students experiencing hunger on campus, and the availability of Emergency Microgrants for students facing financial difficulty due to emergency situations or one-time hardships.

The final Sustainability Seminar of the semester will be the Sustainable Infrastructure Hub Seminar, led by Dr. David Bayless, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 5 in the Baker University Center Front Room.

Attend the seminar to learn about OHIO sustainability initiatives in the themes of Buildings, Energy, Waste and Water.  The first 10 people to ask a question receive a free coffee coupon.
