OHIO VisCom senior wins first place in national Photojournalism Competition
91探花 VisCom senior Michael Swensen placed first in the National Photojournalism Championship for the 60th Annual Hearst National Championship, winning a $10,000 scholarship. He also won an award for Best Single Photo from the Championship Assignment and placed first in the Photojournalism Picture Story/Series Competition for the 2019-2020 Hearst Journalism Awards Program earlier in the year that qualified him for this competition.
Swensen, a Pittsburgh native, is a second-generation VisCom student whose interest in the career came from growing up around amazing photographers like his father, Jeff, who is a freelance photojournalist and completed graduate coursework in OHIO鈥檚 VisCom program earlier in his career. His work is also strongly influenced by photographers like Chris Hondros, Justin Merriman, Stephanie Strasburg, and Todd Heisler.
鈥淚t was through them that I became deeply interested in the human condition and storytelling,鈥 Swenson said. 鈥淚 knew that OHIO鈥檚 VisCom program had a great staff of professors that could help me acquire the skills needed to tell stories and how to operate in an ever-changing world of journalism. I feel a deep sense of gratitude to all of my professors.鈥
The Swensen submitted for the initial Photojournalism Picture Story/Series competition were part of a project documenting a Kentucky farmer and his family, following them as they transitioned from farming tobacco as their main crop to farming hemp. Part of this project was completed for his VisCom capstone class taught by professor Stan Alost.
鈥淢ichael is a very driven and creative individual,鈥 Alost said. 鈥淗e sees the world in a unique way and is able to create photographs that take audiences into common places and make them feel special. He is able to use light and moments to create images that evoke emotions from an audience and help us understand others.鈥
The Hearst Championships are the culmination of the 2019 鈥 2020 Journalism Awards Program, which were held in 104 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs.
鈥淚 am honored and grateful for everyone who made this work possible,鈥 Swensen said. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud to be a VisCom student.鈥
According to a press release from the Hearst Foundation, the Photojournalism Picture Story/Series Competition winners were selected from 89 entries submitted from 55 schools nationwide, with 29 finalists making it to the championship. The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is an annual award in its 60th year, with the photojournalism category in its 50th year. It is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the in-person Championship planned for Houston, Texas was replaced by a virtual event. Finalists met their judges and received their assignments over video-conference meetings, then produced and submitted their pieces from home.
