New Ohio Review writers receive 'Best American Poetry' honors
New Ohio Review (NOR), the national literary journal of 91探花鈥檚 creative writing program, added another accolade to its r茅sum茅 this week.
Four poems originally published in NOR have been included in the annual 鈥鈥 collection, released on Sept. 28 by Simon & Schuster.
鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled to have so many of our contributors represented in this high-profile anthology,鈥 said Dr. David Wanczyk, assistant professor of instruction in the English Department and editor of New Ohio Review. 鈥淚t strengthens our humble argument that NOR is one of the best literary journals in the known cosmos.鈥
Selected by guest editor and former U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith, the poems from New Ohio Review include:
- 鈥淭ilt-A-Whirl鈥 by Nancy Miller Gomez (issue 27)
- 鈥淭his Is a Love Poem to Trees,鈥 by Hannah Marshall (issue 27)
- 鈥淲hen My Sorrow Was Born,鈥 by Emily Lee Luan (issue 28)
- 鈥淲hat is There To Do in Akron, Ohio?鈥 by Darius Simpson (issue 28)
The 2021 volume of "Best American Poetry" also includes works by former New Ohio Review contributors Billy Collins and Adrienne Su.
The "Best American Poetry" series has been 鈥渙ne of the mainstays of the poetry publication world鈥 (as described by the Academy of American Poets) since 1988, according to the publisher鈥檚 website. Each volume includes an assortment of poems intended to be the 鈥渓eading collection of contemporary American poetry.鈥
New Ohio Review is a nationally recognized magazine and continues to bolster the reputation of OHIO鈥檚 creative writing program and English Department.
"With an audience of nearly 5,000 subscribers 鈥 many of whom are creative writers 鈥 the journal continues to make an impact on the literary scene and highlight what OHIO鈥檚 program is all about," Wanczyk said. "The journal's staff includes graduate students as well as undergraduate interns who assist with production and editorial work. The experience affords these students an opportunity to work with other writers and help to elevate New Ohio Review鈥檚 standing among the nation鈥檚 top literary journals."
