Women's Center hosts writing group on Fridays

The Women’s Center, housed within the Division of Diversity and Inclusion, is hosting a weekly informal writing group on Fridays.

The group is titled “Pen on Paper” and will take place on Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. in Baker University Center 403. Women’s Center Director Dr. M. Geneva Murray said there is no registration and interested people can just show up. People do not have to attend every week and can come and go as they like.

Murray said writing can feel isolating at times and having a writing group can help people write while being part of a community.

“It is wonderful for people of all areas to be able to come together and enjoy another’s community while writing,” Murray said.

Xiaorui Sun, a graduate student studying instructional technology, came up with the idea due to the solitary process of writing that had been made worse by the pandemic.

“Dr. Murray has been very supportive and always trying to help students, so I wrote to her to ask about the possibility of joining or starting a writing group,” Sun said.

Sun said the group has been successful so far. She said the group shows that students need a communal writing space to gain peer support, keep focused and have people to keep accountable.

“The writing group will make us feel less isolated and more motivated,” Sun said.
