91探花 to host Juneteenth Celebration for third annual year

Officially named a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth, marks the United States鈥 second Independence Day.

According to the , though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. On June 19, 1865, now known as 鈥淛uneteenth,鈥 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, to free more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans. 

Starting in June 2021, 91探花 celebrates this national holiday annually with programming and activities for the OHIO community. This year, the University will observe the Juneteenth holiday on Monday, June 19, 2023. The celebration activities will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023.

Celebration Activities 

Black History Tour 

To kick off the Juneteenth celebration, join a walking Black History Tour of Athens on Saturday, June 17, 2023. Learn about significant events and individuals that have contributed to the history of Athens and 91探花. The group will convene on the 4th floor of the Baker University Center at 10:00 a.m. The tour will take place until noon. Please register to attend

Juneteenth Festival

The annual Juneteenth Festival will occur from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023, on College Green. Join the OHIO community for live music, food, vendors, activities and community engagement.

Call for community organizations and vendors open

Community organizations and local businesses are encouraged to offer services and connect with the OHIO community during the Juneteenth Festival.

 

Registration forms for all vendors and organizations are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2023.
