91探花's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, in collaboration with the 91探花 Libraries, the Geography Department, and University Planning, will host GIS Day 2023 on Nov. 15. The event will take place on the Athens campus at Alden Library, Room 319, from 1-5 p.m.
GIS Day is an international observance in honor of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the cutting-edge technology that allows people to collect, analyze, and visualize geographic data. This technology is used in decision-making, problem identification, trend understanding, priority setting, and change monitoring.
This year's celebration will feature real-world examples of GIS across various fields. Attendees are welcome to join a networking event following the presentations, from 5-6 p.m. for a chance to interact with the presenters, forge connections with other GIS enthusiasts, and enjoy some refreshments.
This November, 91探花 will join hundreds of organizations worldwide in hosting in-person and virtual gatherings that will celebrate the impactful work of GIS professionals and serve to ignite the imagination of the future innovators who will further advance global progress using GIS.
More than 20 years ago, Jack Dangermond, the founder and president of Esri, a global market leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, location intelligence, and mapping, envisioned people collaborating and sharing how GIS affects everyone. This led to the establishment of GIS Day, which was first observed in 1999. The explosion of geospatial technology since then has expanded that idea into a global event that shows how geography and the real-world applications of GIS are making a difference in business, government and society.
