Highly successful WOUB News Summer Internship Program comes to a close

With the start of fall semester just around the corner, the WOUB Summer Internship Program has ended. But the 10 full-time and five part-time college students who started their summer internship program in the WOUB Newsroom on May 13, took full advantage of the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on professional media training while serving the region with important news and information.

The 11-week program pays interns to work at WOUB Public Media and provides them with an immersive practical experience while producing daily content in a professional multimedia organization.

鈥淭he 10 full-time interns covered 106 stories and created more than 270 versions of those stories for television, radio and web,鈥 said WOUB News Editor-in-Chief Atish Baidya. 鈥淭hese stories provided a tremendous service to the region while the interns had a chance to work as news media professionals and improve on their skills.鈥

The annual internship provides students with real-world experience that challenges them to grow as media professionals while working with WOUB staff. While learning, the interns are covering stories and producing newscasts that provide vital news and information to the region.

鈥淭he interns produced 47 episodes of WOUB TV鈥檚 nightly newscast, NewsWatch, which equals 1128 minutes of television news,鈥 said Baidya. 鈥淭hey got hands on experience, made connections with local officials, learned how to build source relationships, and learned how to handle challenging situations while out on stories.鈥

The Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation WOUB Internship Fund (in Memory of Jan and Olivia Sole) helps support salaries for the student interns. The fund was established in memory of Jan Sole (1956-2007) and her late daughter, Olivia Gray Sole (1989-2004). Jan Sole graduated from OHIO鈥檚 Journalism school in 1979 and worked at WOUB as a radio producer and host of the station鈥檚 classical music program for 25 years.
