OHIO鈥檚 alumni network is second-to-none, with accomplished professionals working across the country and the world who are always happy to help a fellow Bobcat. In the Scripps College of Communication, college leaders noticed that current students make especially strong connections with alumni who are close to their own age. This observation led to the creation of the Scripps Young Alumni Council.
Erin Roberts, the director of student development for Scripps College helped form the council with Scott Titsworth, dean of Scripps College.
鈥淪cott and I have been thinking about something like this for a couple of years,鈥 Roberts said. "We've found that students do really well speaking to alumni that are only a couple years out or maybe five to 10 years out."
It鈥檚 going to be a real powerhouse, and a kind of think tank for the college and for the dean.
The council鈥檚 focus is engagement; its members will meet with students and staff to discuss career development opportunities, create and assess curriculum, and provide resources to undergraduate students.
The Young Alumni Council will be structurally similar to the college鈥檚 long-running Dean鈥檚 Advisory Council. Both groups have regular meetings that occur virtually, with two on-campus meetings each year that will coordinate to maximize collaboration between the new and established alumni.
鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be a real powerhouse, and a kind of think tank for the college and for the dean,鈥 Roberts said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to see the two councils come together.鈥
Each council member has unique experiences and perspectives that are valuable to students and staff alike. A few of them shared their thoughts on joining:
鈥淚 was so excited for the opportunity to join the Scripps Young Alumni Council and engage with current students,鈥 Arielle Patterson (BSJ 鈥15) said. 鈥淟ooking back, it would've been so helpful to me, as an undergraduate, to hear from young alumni in career fields like mine. Now, as a member of the Young Alumni Council, I can't wait to share my career experiences with current students and potentially help them achieve their professional goals.鈥
鈥淚t is an honor and a privilege to be able to participate in the inaugural cohort of the Scripps College of Communication Young Alumni Council,鈥 Danny Cox (BSJ 鈥10) said. 鈥淎s an undergraduate, I was highly active in student organizations and relished every opportunity to share my enthusiasm with incoming students and alumni alike as a precollege advisor and student manager for alumni donations.鈥
The opportunity to engage with such a passionate and talented group of alumni, while also connecting with current students, is incredibly rewarding.
