Writing Commons and Testing Center to become neighbors in Bromley Hall

The Writing Commons (part of OHIO's Academic Achievement Center) and the Testing Center would like to announce that their services are finding new homes on the Athens Campus.

The Writing Commons will be moving from Alden Library 230 to Bromley Hall 031 at the beginning of Spring Semester 2025. Bromley Hall sits at the corner of South Congress Street and West Union Street, offering convenient access to students.

The Testing Center, which used to occupy the new Writing Commons space, has already moved just up the stairs to Bromley 042.

"We aim to be good neighbors, and both programs will continue to provide the same great services to Bobcats,鈥 said David Haugen, assistant director of the Writing Commons

Along with online appointment-making through the AAC webpage and upcoming in-person scheduling at Bromley, OHIO students will still be able to book sessions with the Writing Commons at the front desk in Alden 230, and some graduate writing support will continue in Room 226 (the fishbowl). Most other scheduled meetings (specifically undergraduate writing support) will occur in Bromley unless otherwise noted.

鈥淲e are excited to have a dedicated space for writing assistance, but we anticipate having some satellite locations鈥攊ncluding Alden鈥攖o serve specific populations of writers,鈥 Haugen said.

Students will be able to access the new Writing Commons space through the lower level doors on West Union Street. Until the end of Fall Semester 2024, writing assistance will continue to operate out of Alden.

The Testing Center will maintain its high standards of proctoring exams for OHIO students in the new space in Bromley 042. Students can enter this suite through upper level doors on West Union.

Eszti Major-Rohrer, the senior director of Teaching and Learning Systems, explained the reason for the slight relocation of the testing service.

鈥淪ince the pandemic, the demand for in-person standardized exam proctoring has declined as our testing provider now offers online proctoring, allowing students to take exams from home. As a result, we are thrilled to partner with the Academic Achievement Center to repurpose part of the current Testing Center space,鈥 Major-Rohrer said. 鈥淲e continue to provide essential proctoring for accommodated exams if instructors need help with arrangements and high-stakes exams for online courses.鈥
