College of Arts & Sciences Fast Facts

The College of Arts and Sciences has 19 departments spanning humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Special programs include Women鈥檚, Gender & Sexuality Studies; the Ohio Program of Intensive English; and Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Each year we host nearly 400 events, bringing top researchers, scholars and alumni from around the world back to campus 鈥 in person or virtually 鈥 to talk with our students.

Our Alumni

Our alumni include members of the National Academy of Sciences, CEOs and ambassadors, award-winning authors, and professors at universities around the world.

You鈥檒l find our alumni in leadership roles in science and technology, business and industry, government and public affairs, health and human services because Arts & Sciences alumni know the world doesn鈥檛 need them to just navigate change 鈥 it needs them to lead it.

    Nobel Laureate Venki Ramakrishnan


    Venkatraman 鈥淰enki鈥 Ramakrishnan was 19 years old when he left his home in Baroda, India to join the 91探花 community in 1971. A first-year graduate student in physics, he had never dreamed that he would one day earn the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the structure of ribosomes.

Our Faculty

Our faculty are a key part of 91探花鈥檚 R1 Carnegie Classification, educating the next generation of Ph.D. candidates in esteemed programs in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Math, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Physics, Plant Biology, and Psychology.

They inspire our students 鈥 a third of them the first in their families to attend college 鈥 to examine the world through a critical lens and seek solutions to 21st century problems. No student graduates without memories of a favorite professor who broadened their horizons and helped launch their careers.

Our Research & Facilities

Among the college's research facilities and equipment are a Tandem van de Graff nuclear accelerator, a helium low-temperature laboratory, multiple electron microscopes, a mammalian recombinant genetics laboratory, a nuclear magnetic resonator, several chemical spectrometers, a photomicroscopy laboratory, and a herbarium with more than 4,500 species.
