Asbestos

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that has been used for many decades in all types of building materials, because it is strong, flexible, acid resistant, heat resistant, and weavable. Unfortunately, excessive asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Asbestos was used in many types of building products, generally prior to 1980. Numerous buildings nationwide contain various asbestos containing materials, also known as ACM. If disturbed, friable or crumbly asbestos can become airborne and may create a health hazard. For this reason, asbestos in buildings must be managed in place, and properly removed before renovations and demolition. 91探花 maintains an Asbestos Management Program [PDF] managed by the Safety Department, and has an Environmental Services Shop in Facilities Management & Safety for the proper care of asbestos containing materials. The Safety Department maintains an asbestos analysis laboratory. All university buildings have been inspected to identify asbestos containing materials and mapped. All renovation and demolition projects are managed by asbestos professionals.
