Ensemble Auditions — Fall

Fall 2024 Instrumental Auditions

(REVISED AUGUST 2, 2024) 

Schedule

Placement auditions for the Fall semester for Symphonic Band, Placement auditions for the Fall semester for Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra will be held during the first week of classes in August. Note that some auditions will occur the weekend before classes begin. 

Marching 110 and Jazz Ensemble auditions are held separately.

Winds and percussion: All students wishing to audition for Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony should prepare the following excerpts. There is no audition required to participate in University Band (MUS 2512/5512); students who are interested in University Band should attend the first rehearsal on Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm in Glidden 101.

Strings: Music majors auditioning for Symphony Orchestra should prepare the following excerpts. Non-majors auditioning for Symphony Orchestra or Campus Orchestra may alternatively choose to perform a short selection of their choice, and/or scales. Students who wish to only be considered for Campus Orchestra may attend its first rehearsal, Tuesdays 7-9pm in Glidden 494.

Piano, Harp, and Keyboard: Assigned by department.

Monday, August 26 (CLASSES BEGIN)

  • 2-4pm Clarinet/Bass Clarinet/Eb Clarinet (Recital Hall)
  • 7:30-8:15pm Euphonium (Recital Hall)
  • 8:15-9:15pm Tuba (Recital Hall)

  • 8:00-9:00pm Viola/Cello/Bass (Glidden 101)

Tuesday, August 27

Excerpts

Click your instrument to access PDF copies of the audition excerpts. Applied faculty may have additional works to prepare and/or sight-reading. Auxiliary instruments (i.e., Piccolo, English Horn, Bass Clarinet, Contrabassoon) may be auditioned at the same time as their principal correlates.

Transposed parts should be played in the correct keys unless otherwise instructed. Prepare first parts (upper division) unless otherwise indicated. Unless indicated, please select your own bowings, breaths, and fingerings; feel free to consult with a teacher/professor.
