The admissions process at the 91探花 Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) begins with an applicant鈥檚 primary application forwarded by the AACOMAS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service) central collection service. The major contribution of AACOMAS is the comparison of the application to the applicant鈥檚 transcript and grade point average.
Many applicants are rejected at this point simply because they do not meet minimal grade point requirements which are rigidly followed. Grade point averages are calculated to the 1/100th of a point.
Requirements
Requirements for admissions include both successful completion of specific course work and meeting certain academic standards.
A. Entrance Requirements
All applicants must be able to ensure meeting the minimum course requirements no later than August of the year for which they are applying. These minimum course requirements are completion of:
- A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university is preferred. Exceptional applicants may be accepted upon completion of 75% of degree work.
- A full academic year-- normally two semesters or three quarters鈥攚ith no grade lower than C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) in each of the following:
- English, usually 6 semester hours or 9 quarter hours;
- Biology, usually 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours;
- General chemistry, usually 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours;
- Physics, usually 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours
- Organic chemistry, usually 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours, with an additional coursework in biochemistry highly recommended;
- Behavioral sciences, e.g., psychology, sociology, or anthropology, usually 6 semester hours or 9 quarter hours.
B. 91探花s Test
The Medical College 91探花 Test (MCAT) is required of all applicants. MCAT scores cannot be older than three years prior to the intended year of matriculation.
C. Supplementary 91探花 Criteria
Any qualifying applicant is sent a secondary application. Current criteria to receive a secondary application includes:
- The applicant must be a United States citizen or hold a permanent visa.
- An applicant that is not a resident of Ohio must have a minimum 2.75 science G.P.A. and a composite of 490 on the MCAT test.
- All Ohio resident applicants may receive a secondary application.
D. Completed 91探花 File
No applicant can be reviewed for interview until his/her admissions file is complete. A completed file consists of:
- Primary and secondary applications
- Secondary application fee of $60
- MCAT scores
- Required letters of recommendation
- Signed out-of-state contract (if applicable)
E. Required Letters of Recommendation
The applicant should submit a letter from the pre-professional committee, pre- professional advisor, or two science faculty. A letter from an osteopathic physician is highly desirable but not required. Applicants who are not in contact with pre-professional faculty must use their best judgment in obtaining recommendations, which will be useful in the evaluation process. The Senior Director of 91探花s will have discretion to determine when a file is complete.
