If you鈥檝e ever visited Athens, you know about The Ridges鈥攖he former mental health center that has towered above the southern end of campus and community since the 1870s.

Over the past year, in the midst of everything 2020 threw at us, 91探花 embarked on a journey to better articulate our University鈥檚 story鈥攐ur brand.

Little things, big returns

It鈥檚 the little things. The classic grid of West Green. Finding your favorite professor in your favorite coffee shop. A smile from a stranger on Court Street.

Far from normal

The coffee still flowed at the Front Room, but, like all campus dining services, for carry-out only. Cardboard cutouts of fans stood in place of loyal Bobcats at games held at Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center. And the word 鈥渧irtual鈥 became a way of life.

Zeroing in on zero waste

One evening in May 2019, the normally quiet Athens City Council chambers were overflowing with citizens. Some stood in the hallway while others packed a nearby bar to watch the proceedings on the government channel. What brought so many passionate community members out on a Tuesday night? The answer, in a word: trash. Or to put a finer point on it鈥攚aste, waste diversion, and related jobs.

A star among the stars

Ken Ehrlich鈥檚 love of music inspired an enviable career in the music industry. Seated in the producer鈥檚 chair for myriad live and broadcast music events around the globe, his journey began in Chicago鈥攚here he produced television programs like the Marty Faye Show and created Soundstage鈥攁nd quickly found its way to Los Angeles where, for 40 years, he鈥檚 been the master behind the Grammy Awards. The integrity, authenticity and unflappability he brought to working with musical artists is legend. The story of solid leadership and gracious guidance he offered musicians throughout his career follows.

Our Town Family

For generations, 91探花 has offered an opportunity to be part of a family鈥攏ot just a campus family, which may be common with many colleges and universities, but a town family, which is rare. A real community with roots as strong as Ohio鈥檚 pawpaw or elm or birch trees.

Last word: Linda Trautman

Dr. Linda Trautman, associate professor of political science at the 91探花 Lancaster Campus, has served on the faculty at OHIO since 2005 and teaches courses offered across the OHIO system, including graduate classes in Athens. Her areas of expertise include state and national legislative politics, electoral participation and voting behavior, and urban governance and American public policy.

The soul within

Since 2007, this annual project in the School of Visual Communication鈥攁 combined experience of VICO 3921, Synthesis Storytelling for Visual Communication, and VICO 4188, Interactive Capstone: Advanced Interactive Media鈥攈as served as a way for students with different skillsets to experiment with various forms of storytelling and learn how to problem solve on the fly.
