Study Away Programs

Students in the Scripps College of Communication have several opportunities to participate in Study Away programs, domestically and abroad, both in and outside the college. Below are several featured programs.

OHIO-in-LA 

The OHIO-in-LA program is designed to give students an intensive experience of living and working in Hollywood's media and creative industries. Students take classes for OHIO credit, intern at LA-based media companies, network with hundreds of professionals, tour studios and attend productions, and produce a short film.

Scripps Semester in D.C.

The Scripps Semester in D.C. program is a collaboration between the School of Visual Communication and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and is also open to Communication Studies and Media Arts & Studies majors. The program gives students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals working in the nation's capital, focusing on journalism (including print, broadcast, data, and photojournalism), strategic communication, commercial photography, UX design, information graphics, data visualization, and publication design.

MDIA Masterclass Brooklyn with Joel Hamilton

This exclusive Masterclass in Brooklyn with Joel Hamilton offers the opportunity for 91探花 students to work side-by-side with a notable music producer, allowing them to serve in an apprenticeship role as a team during recording and mixing sessions. 

Joel Hamilton, a Brooklyn-based record producer, engineer, and musician, is the co-owner of Studio G Brooklyn. He boasts Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, and has showcased his talents on acclaimed projects like Highly Suspect's Grammy-nominated "Mister Asylum" and "The Boy Who Died Wolf." Hamilton's collaboration highlights include working alongside Rick Rubin and Paul McCartney for the Emmy-nominated 鈥淢cCartney 3-2-1鈥, Mixing with Danny Elfman, engineering for Bomba Estereo's Latin Grammy-nominated 鈥淓legancia Tropical,鈥 and producing for artists ranging from The Black Keys to Tom Waits. A multi-instrumentalist, Joel is also part of the band Book of Knots and has contributed to soundtracks, such as the film 鈥淐harlie, Victor, Romeo鈥 premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.

MDIA Masterclass Providence with Jim Eno

This exclusive Masterclass in Providence with Jim Eno offers the opportunity for 91探花 students to work side-by-side with a notable music producer for one week, allowing them to serve in an apprenticeship role as a team during recording and mixing session. This year, students will visit Public Hi-Fi in Providence, RI to work alongside famed producer/dummer, Jim Eno.

South By Southwest

The 91探花 SXSW industry immersion course provides students access to the largest creative media industry gathering of the year, offering an unparalleled convergence of the music, interactive, and film industries and fostering an engaging atmosphere for professional and educational growth.鈥 

Students will hear personally from industry professionals in a variety of ways, including panel discussions, keynote addresses, interviews, workshops, as well as one-on-one mentoring sessions with professionals in their specific field of choice.鈥 

Attendees will observe firsthand the scope and networks that exist within today鈥檚 current music and media industries and can build strategic partnerships for internships and network with potential employers, colleagues, and clients. 

Additionally, students have access to hundreds of events in their areas of interest, including music showcases with established and upcoming artists, film premieres featuring directors and cast members, technology demonstrations of the newest trends in traditional, VR, and emerging media, and countless opportunities to explore creative expression across multiple venues in the city.
