91探花鈥檚 Scripps College of Communication calls for Communication Fellows applications

December 13, 2019

ATHENS, Ohio 鈥擳he 91探花 Scripps College of Communication invites PK-12 teachers in Ohio to apply for the 2020-21 Communication Fellows Program. Designed to bolster innovation in communication education, the program also provides professional development, mentorship and networking opportunities. Fellows receive financial stipends and other support for projects they complete over the course of their fellowship.

Applicants must respond to the call for proposals by January 15, 2020. Up to 10 fellows are named each year, with five from rural Appalachian districts and five from urban districts in the state of Ohio.

鈥淥ne of the really special aspects of the Communication Fellows programs has been the relationships participants build within their cohorts,鈥 said Dean Scott Titsworth. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e all such dedicated and enthusiastic educators; when they get together to share ideas, their output is just inspiring.鈥

Communication Fellows attend a one-week summer residential experience at 91探花鈥檚 main campus in Athens and receive free tuition for a graduate-level online course, a $1,500 stipend and a $1,000 classroom stipend. College faculty members serve as mentors, supporting the teachers as they develop and complete their project proposals during the residential experience and throughout the year.

Those selected for the fellowship will be notified by February 21, 2020, and invited to the Scripps College of Communication celebration, part of Communication Week at 91探花 during the week of March 30-April 3, 2020. Availability to attend does not impact selection process.

鈥淭he most rewarding part of being a Communication Fellow was going to the summer institute at 91探花,鈥 said Laura Moore, a 2019 fellow and English teacher at Newark Digital Academy. 鈥淚 met so many professors, faculty members, and fellow teachers who inspired me. I left with new ideas, confidence, and a list of resources that helped me to form my ideas about what I wanted my class to be and what to include in the curriculum.鈥
