Five OHIO students completed Community Based Internships over the summer through the Center for Campus and Community Engagement (CCCE). Local organizations in the nonprofit and public sector spaces accepted these students as interns through the Community Based Internship Program for Summer 2023. The program focuses on providing students and organizations with internships that are mutually beneficial and leave a lasting positive impact on southeast Ohio.

The colorful dragon hoisted by members of the Athens Asian American Alliance (AAAA), Asian-American Pacific Islander Student Union (AAPISU), and AAPI-Lead made its second appearance at the homecoming parade this year. The groups serve to celebrate and advocate for their communities on and off campus.

Before graduating with her master's degree in theater, Alyssa Embry partnered with Passion Works Studio and the Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities to put her accessible arts research to work and created a sensory-friendly theater experience for her thesis.

The Women's Center鈥檚 mission is to act as a catalyst promoting awareness, education, and advocacy about women, gender, and diversity at 91探花 and in its surrounding communities. Much of their programming is intentionally designed to reinforce this goal by providing opportunities for OHIO students and Athens community members to connect with one another and learn together.
One program that fosters relationships between OHIO students, staff, faculty and community members is the Mentoring Women Program, in which mentees are paired with a female mentor in their personal and professional fields of interest and meet throughout the semester.

Jamie Brown is an 91探花-Chillicothe student studying communications and graduating this spring. Jamie is also participating in the Community Work-Study Program as an Education Assistant at YouthBuild, a program of Sojourner鈥檚 Care Network. As an Education Assistant at YouthBuild, Jamie works with at-risk students in the Chillicothe community. YouthBuild serves youth pursuing GED and secondary diplomas. They also work together on community service projects and build relationships with local businesses to help build positive labor futures.
鈥淢y favorite part of my work with YouthBuild is knowing the value of my work,鈥 Jamie says. 鈥淎t-risk students face challenges that require immediate intervention and having that experience from immersion helps me to appreciate the work in real time.鈥

The Office of Sustainability at 91探花 has been working hard to create community outreach programs for OHIO community members and for the Athens community. The Office of Sustainability facilitates the implementation of the 91探花 Sustainability and Climate Action Plan and ensures fulfillment of institutional commitments to environmental, social, and economic well-being.

Dr. Jacob Hiler, Director of the Center for Consumer Research and Analytics (CRA), prioritizes looking for opportunities to give back to the university and the community. Under Dr. Hiler鈥檚 leadership, the mission of the CRA has expanded to serve non-profit and local business partners.

Maxeen Ramlo is a senior studying mechanical engineering in the Russ College of Engineering who puts in just as much time to her education as she does to engaging in our community. Since she started as a freshman at 91探花, she has been very politically involved and worked hard to connect campus involvement to community involvement at 91探花.

For over five years, Andie Walla and her Media Production for Community students have worked with local nonprofit organizations to produce promotional videos highlighting different organizations. This year they worked with the Dairy Barn Arts Center and Southeast Ohio History Center.
