Francine Childs, HON 鈥97, EMERT 鈥05, is many things to many people. 91探花鈥檚 first tenured black professor, she鈥檚 a stalwart social justice advocate. On campus and in the community, she鈥檚 a symbol of perseverance, selflessness, and spunk. To her students, she鈥檚 simply 鈥淒oc,鈥 or more affectionately, 鈥淢ama Childs.鈥

Robert Gipe of Harlan, Kentucky, has long advocated for both social justice and the arts in Appalachia.

Before the epic task of moving the Hocking River took place in 1970, water would course through campus and cause massive flooding.

We survived!

Prior to 1970, when the Hocking River would tumble over its banks, the nearby Athens Campus would be ravaged by the floodwaters. Moving the river in 1970 to its current location鈥攁n epic task鈥攔emoved the annual threat so the Athens Campus could expand.
