Online Master's in Reading Education Curriculum
Prior Coursework
No courses (undergraduate or graduate level) will be considered for credit toward the graduate degree, with the exception of phonics and those courses completed previously as part of the 91探花 Reading Endorsement Program (EDTE 5200, 5220, 5230, and 5260 (completed prior to or during Spring 2019搂); EDTE 5201, 5221, 5230, and 5261 (completed Summer 2019 or later)).
搂Reading Endorsement(opens in a new window) coursework is transferable to the Master's of Reading Education for five (5) years after its completion.
Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE)
Upon completion of the program, candidates will be eligible to receive their reading endorsement. For this, the OAE reading exam must be taken and passed.
Graduation Requirements
Required Courses
Complete a minimum of 31 credit hours as follows:
- EDTE 5201 - Theoretical Foundations of Reading Instruction
- EDTE 5210 - Foundation of Language and Diversity
- EDTE 5221 - Diagnosis: Reading/Language Arts
- EDTE 5230 - Reading/Language: Laboratory
- EDTE 5240 - Literature for Children and Adolescents
- EDTE 5261 - Secondary Reading Instruction
- EDTE 5600 - Advanced Studies of Children and Adolescents
- EDTE 6230 - Coaching Classroom Teachers in Reading/Literacy
- EDTE 6670 - Teacher as Action Researcher
- EDTE 6940 - Master Research Project
Students who have not completed an undergraduate equivalent must also complete the following course:
- EDTE 5270 - Phonics and the Structure of Language
Field Experience
All students complete field hours working with K-12 students, as part of coursework as follows:
- EDTE 5221 - Diagnosis: Reading/Language Arts: 35 hours
- EDTE 5230 - Reading Laboratory: 35 hours
- EDTE 5261 - Secondary Reading Instruction: 35 hours
All students also complete field hours working with teachers and other educators, as part of coursework as follows:
- EDTE 6230 - Coaching Classroom Teachers in Reading/Literacy: 60 hours
Culminating Experience
Students complete a master鈥檚 research project (EDTE 6940).
